ALA Cheshire & North Wales – Estate Visit

Tuesday 7 March 2023

The ALA Cheshire & North Wales invite you to a visit to the National Trust estate at Erddig on Tuesday, 7 March.

A provincial estate extending to 518ha (1,281 acres) bordering the southern flank of Wrexham, Erddig gives the illusion of a completely rural estate; yet abuts the suburban sprawl of the town with a 4km woodland boundary. The management of this boundary is often challenging. The Estate surrounds a grand house (CADW Grade 1 Listed) and Registered Historic Parkland (also Grade 1 Listed). Major works in the parklad were undertaken by William Emes, a contemporary of Capability Brown between 1767 and 1789. The Estate was gifted to the National Trust by Phillip Yorke in 1973.

Within the estate management plan for Erddig, one of the strategic challenges is to ‘restore a healthy, beautiful natural environment’ and the National Trust are currently aiming to improve the condition of their SSSIs and Priority Habitats within the Estate; aiming to reach High Nature Status for as much land as possible.

Erddig is also the location of Wales’ new commemorative woodlands which will stand as living memorials to those who sadly lost their lives during the Covid-19 pandemic.
